Open burning bans have gone into place across much of Iowa, but for right now, Winneshiek County is not looking at one.

Next door in Howard County, a burn ban is already in effect, among 23 Iowa counties currently with one in place.

Northeast Iowa is avoiding the drought conditions present in several Iowa counties, but challenges are in place for area farmers, nonetheless.

Right now, “extreme” drought is officially in place for 10 northwest Iowa counties while varying levels of drought persist elsewhere, including southeast Iowa.

Pole Line Road Work Nears Finish Line

A major roadway is continuing to see progress as work continues ahead of the snow starting to fly.

“Bruennings have finished grading and rocking Pole Line Road,” said Engineer Lee Bjerke.

Things will have to sit for a while with the process seeing an impact from cool temperatures.

Supervisors Wary of Posting Meetings

“I’ve been watching the meetings for probably many, many years,” said resident Kevin Lee. “I’ve been noticing many counties put their meetings up on YouTube.”

A wish list of upcoming projects is already being eyed by Winneshiek County Secondary Roads with grant funding one of the sources that could be used to pay for work.

“We will be in competition with DOT for some of this,” said Engineer Lee Bjerke.

Radio Upgrade Passes Hurdle

The Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors are closing in on making a needed upgrade of county radio communications a reality.

“We got two spots now,” said Supervisor Mark Vick Monday morning as he briefed the board on recent development.

One is near Burr Oak, and supervisors approved an agreement for $28,000 for the site Monday.

Coming up, a second site is near Ossian.

“They surveyed that last Wednesday,” said Chairman Dan Langreck.

Movement should come soon with an agreement likely to come before the board in short order.

TV Shop Project Moving Ahead

A shop project at Turkey Valley is continuing to move forward, and a tight hiring market has the district looking at officials pay.

Superintendent Jay Jurrens presented the Turkey Valley Board of Education information on the proposed shop project.
